Dear Parents of Visual Arts Students,
It was amazing to see so many of you during curriculum night on Monday evening.
Glad that you were able to experience being in Wellington's 'Art Studio 201" and
see your child's art work.
As you can see we have been busy with our first and in some cases second projects:
Grade K- The children's first project was to explore space on paper with marks.
Students filled the entire paper surface with different types of dots and lines and
identified the top, bottom, right and left edges to create their design. They reserved
a special place for the most important and largest dot. Children enjoyed exploring dots
with Bingo Daubers and lines with markers. Color selections were left to their own
decisions! For their second project, students used a horizontal line to divide the space
on their paper (a thought bubble shape piece of paper) to draw a picture from their
memory of their playroom. They learned that artists obtain many of their ideas from their
memory!
Grade 1- First graders are making clown portraits using expressive lines and shapes to
create emotions. They are identifying the features, proportions and placement on the
clown's face. Colorful patterns with 3-D additions will complete the look!
Grade 2- Second graders just completed making up their own character by using their
imagination in the Miro's surreal style of painting. Their made-up lines, dots and shapes
made for a very playful, fanciful and humorous lesson. Each student uniquely created their
own figure.
Grade 3- Students chose a geometric shape from which to base their drawing thus allowing
them to realize that artists get ideas from various sources such as nature, other people,
objects, imagination, experimentation, and many events. They were then able to make their
very own picture story originate form a circle shape. I think there must be a lot of bikers in
third grade since bicycles were a popular drawn object!
Grade 4-"Capture the Contrast Key Chains" is the title of the first fourth grade art lesson.
As designers they learned how to make contrasts with art elements. They were also able
to balance detailed area along with simplistic ones which made their work succesful.
This piece of art will be a decorative addition to their back packs.
Soon you will see photos of samples of this work by grade level on this website.
Congratulations to these young artists!

'Back to School' Hallway Entrance Bulletin Boards:
There will be art reproductions of famous artists work posted on the hallway entrance bulletin boards for students to experience an art gallery feel. While enjoying the artwork of various mediums students might answer the following questions that will also be listed with this exhibit:
Information about the artwork:
- Who do you think created this piece of art?
- What do you think it is? ( a sculpture, a painting, an abstract)
- What time period do you think it was made in?
- What medium do you think was used?
Describe the artwork:
- What are the dominant colors?
- What is a recognizable subject?
- What is in the background?
What do you think the artist was trying to say?
How do you feel about the artwork?
- What emotion does this artwork make you feel?
- Which one would you like to own and why?
Hopefully you will feel like you are visiting an art museum !
