Grade 4 ~ "Community Workers in 3D"
Fourth graders took a sheet of aluminum foil and formed it into a 3 dimensional figure which would later represent a community worker of choice. Much like Fashion Designers students worked with different styles of clothing colors, patterns and textures, while dressing the figures with colored tissue and foil paper. They cut, creased and painted an environment for these foil figures with a single sheet of oak tag. Students experienced the role of an Interior Designer to understand the purpose of the room design and the special features required. A cinquain poem completed the look!
Grade 3 ~ "Regular & Random Rhythm Backpacks"
Third graders became familiar with visual rhythm when looking at a powerpoint of slides with pictures of repeated colors and shapes. They saw images from carefully designed stencil motifs to patterns in nature like lilies in a lily pond in order to identify regular or random rhythm. Students were also able to identify occurrences of balance, repetition and variety when making decisions about designing their own backpacks. Color choices were made with neon paint and the use of a paint brush and spray bottle for effectively representing the objective!
Grade 2 ~ Ceramic Guppies...stay tuned!
All guppies have been formed out of clay and fired once in the kiln. After February vacation the guppies will be glazed and returned to the kiln for a second firing.
Grade 1 ~ "Wuzzles" (Looking at Creatures and Creating Textures)
First grade artists looked at many animal photos to see how the use of line and pattern can demonstrate texture. Students recognized that they could create texture with the use of repeated lines and shapes. To experiment, they rubbed over different texture boards and received various types of surfaces from rough to smooth. Students were then ready to add textures to their 'Wuzzles' which they made from drawing different animal parts arranged like a puzzle. They also enjoyed hearing the story "The Mixed-Up Chameleon" by Eric Carle!
Kindergarten ~ "Once Upon a Time There Was a Golden Fish" (Arranging a composition)
Kindergateners were introduced to artist Paul Klee and his painting "Golden Fish" and have inspired to print, draw, and paint their own imaginative picture story. They explored composition by creating artwork which involved printing from a textured rubber fish in the middle of their paper with gold colored paint. Their story emerged from drawing the rest of the picture story utilizing the top, bottom and sides of their paper. The students used watercolor crayon for color whereby water was added to the crayon for a painted feel.
