The start of a new school year is always very exciting for me. I eagerly anticipate seeing all my returning students as well as meeting the new arrivals! This is just one of the many privileges and pleasures I have over the years while serving as their art teacher at Wellington.
Our first class is always dedicated to reviewing the "Rules & Rewards" of our art studio. One thing we all agree upon is how fortunate we are to have an amazing space with which to be creative and how important it is to take care of it. Kids usually address their studio as a "fun place to be in with super supplies!"
The students' first art project of the year quickly begins to take shape after expectations are delivered and discussed. During the process of making art, I try to ask students some specific questions. The following are examples: What can you tell me about your picture or where did you get your idea from? Tell me why a particular color was used or what the favorite part of the picture is and why. Students also try hard to come up with an appropriate title for their artwork. These questions are helpful in generating discussions around thinking and talking about their work.
Wellington School students have truly generated so much enthusiasm for learning the past few days for which I am grateful!
