October was an exciting time to think about creating an 'A-Symmetrical Monster' for fourth graders! They certainly knew how to use their imagination while creating the look and feel of a made-up monster. In addition it had to be created in symmetry with the use of positive and negative shapes while every layer was constructed out of colored construction paper. Each monster expresses an emotion conveyed not only through the facial features but the gestures of the body and color selection. A surprise asymmetrical touch was then added for completion. Our friendly fourth graders certainly made them looking very friendly too!
'Creating an Imaginary Vehicle' to get places generated a variety of ideas by third graders for their second art lesson. They imagined and wondered what it would be like to design their own interesting means of transportation. They first had to wonder where it would take them before they knew what it might look like. Students mixed primary colors together to make secondary colors and made mini color wheels to adhere to their vehicle. The color design of their vehicle depended upon their color mixing experience. It is amazing to see how many land vehicles versus sea and air ones!
When it came to arranging a collection of fall leaves, second graders learned all about making their very own 'Collage'! They used various art materials, techniques and skills to create a variety of visual textured effects. They gained a new appreciation for the work of Eric Carle and they designed and created their "Catch the Fall Feeling" compositions. They all seemed to
enjoy finding beauty from nature for this collage art project!
"When Cats Dream"...First graders were able to create a fantasy picture using realistic pictures of cats as a starting point. They first used their observational skills to sketch cats as they saw them with basic shapes in their very own 'visual journals'. They then used velvet colored paper to draw a cat participating in an activity that first graders usually do to represent a dream. Students were able to distinguish the difference between a cat that is drawn from one's imagination as compared to one that is drawn realistically. There were cats drawn in a dream from playing soccer, pool and tennis to being an artist and a librarian!
Kindergarteners learned 'Much About Matisse' when they explored the shapes and colors of Matisse. They also discovered that what they saw depended upon how you looked at it! Students were able to cut and glue down their own hand cut shapes by selecting their own colors of construction paper. They discovered a picture story of their own. On another piece of paper they drew what they saw from the original cut-out story. Kindergarten students felt by far their favorite Matisse cut-outs were the ones that looked like coral under the sea!
